    A New Era For Municipal Reservoirs: Steel Water Storage Tanks

    Kirkwood Water Supply Scheme Reservoir Project

    Location: Kirkwood and Bontrug, Eastern Cape, South Africa

    Challenge: The Sundays River Valley Municipality required additional treated water storage to maintain reliable supply to multiple communities during planned canal maintenance shutdowns and improve long-term water security.

    SBS Solution: SBS Tanks supplied and installed two ST31/09 modular steel panel reservoirs with a combined storage capacity of approximately 6 million litres. The project included engineering support, manufacturing, delivery, installation, commissioning and project management in partnership with Ruwacon and Newground Projects.

    Result: The completed reservoirs provide critical backup water storage for Kirkwood, Aqua Park, Bergsig, Moses Mabhida and Msengeni, improving system resilience and ensuring continuity of supply during maintenance periods.

    Bulk water storage tank for Nelson Mandela Bay Metro

    The Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality has been experiencing water challenges for
    several years. As part of one of nine initiatives implemented by the municipality, which comprises
    Gqeberha and Kariega (previously known as Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage respectively), a 460,000
    litre bulk water storage tank from SBS® Tanks was installed.

    Fast and effective solution delivered for raw seawater storage

    Anticipated increased water demand from the neighbouring seaside resort towns of Bushman’s River Mouth and Kenton-on-Sea necessitated an increase in the raw seawater storage capacity at the Albany Coast Reverse Osmosis Plant. Situated on the Bushman’s River Mouth the plant abstracts water from wells for desalination for bulk supplier, Amatola Water/Amanzi Board.

    Karoo Community faces water secure future

    In Jansenville, a bulk water storage tank from the SBS Tanks Standard Tank Range was installed to provide an effective 1.3Ml of water storage capacity. The SBS Tanks engineering team designed a specialised ring beam, which was constructed on the existing concrete floor of the old reservoir. Several other design elements were required to ensure that the water, sourced from various boreholes, moved through to the supply tank free and clear of the naturally occurring sediment.

    SBS Tanks blend seamlessly into Karoo landscape

    The Klipplaat community, approximately 30 kilometres from Jansenville in the Dr Beyers Naude Municipality recently became more water secure. As part of a project funded by the Department of Water and Sanitation, SBS Tanks installed an ST21-05 to deliver 775kl of water storage for the area. Due to space limitations, the SBS bulk water storage tank was installed on the floor of the old reservoir after contractors demolished the concrete walls.

    The Jansenville community also benefitted from a water storage tank installation and to help blend the tanks into the natural surroundings, and “match” them to the existing concrete reservoirs which they were installed alongside, the client chose colours from the SBS Tanks powder coated colour range. In Klipplaat the colour Sahara was used, and in Jansenville, the colour Chalk.

    Tank Farm installed to increase bulk potable water storage

    SBS Tanks installed a quick and cost-effective solution to increase bulk potable water storage for the KwaGuqa township, situated west of eMalahleni. The tanks have a combined storage capacity of over 15 million litres and are modular, steel-bolted water storage tanks offering a fast and effective solution for bulk water storage at a community level.

    Two new bulk water storage tanks for Zululand District Municipality

    At Makhosini, in Zululand, the tanks, installed by SBS Tanks’ in-house installation teams, hold a combined capacity of 750,000 litres of water storage. The SBS tank model, ST17/06 provides the bulk of that storage capacity at 600,000 litres and stands just over six metres tall, while the ST13/03 accommodates 150,000 litres of water and stands just over three metres high.

    Gace Farming

    Project Requirements:

    To provide Gace Farming with a cost saving through the production of alternate energy. Gace farming was also faced with the problem of not being able to increase their supply from Eskom. As the farm has expanded over the years, the energy requirement now exceeds that of the current supply so the they needed supplementary supply from solar.

    Solution:

    SBS Energy installed a 120kW peak grid tied solar solution, integrated with a 100kVa generator.
